I actively use two map sets on my Garmin. One is the freeware Southwest Topo Map, and the other is Open Street Maps. OSM is a collaboration effort like a Wiki, and makes a great routable map, that is very up to date. I have seen some misalignment in the Queen Creek area, but no more than my Magellan Roadmate.
This is the web page you want to start at:
http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php1. Center the map on the area you want to build from.
2. Check box "and/or enable manual tile selection:"
3. Zoom in and check tiles you want to include your map.
A. Tiles should turn dark blue.
B. May require multiple clicks.
4. Enter your E-mail address on left side of Screen
5. Click Build Maps.
Note, If you select too large of a map, it will be rejected.
The map link will be e-mailed to you in a few hours, depending on server load.
I built a new map set this morning, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, parts of southern California, Texas, Utah, and Northern Mexico.
It will be available on the server for 48 hours for download:
A zipped copy of the map: osm_routable_gmapsupp.zip
